Building an A-Frame Cabin Is More Achievable Than You Think
Building your own off-grid cabin may seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be.
Several years ago, my family and I built the A-frame cabin you see throughout this website using common tools, careful planning, and a willingness to learn as we went. We weren't a professional construction crew. We were simply a family with a dream of building an affordable cabin where we could slow down, enjoy nature, and spend more time together.
One of the biggest frustrations I had while planning our cabin was the lack of complete, practical information available online. I could find beautiful finished cabins and short project videos, but very few resources explained the entire process from foundation to finished cabin.
That's why I created this guide.
My goal is to give you a roadmap of the entire project while also linking to detailed articles covering each stage of the build. Whether you're just starting to dream about building an A-frame or you're already preparing your foundation, you'll find practical information based on real-world experience rather than theory.
Why Choose an A-Frame Cabin?
A-frame cabins have remained popular for decades, and for good reason.
Their triangular design is naturally strong, relatively simple to build, and creates an attractive cabin that blends well into almost any wooded setting. Because the roof also serves as the walls, there are fewer framing components than many traditional cabin designs.
For our family, an A-frame offered the perfect balance between affordability, simplicity, and appearance.
Our cabin measures 20 feet by 24 feet, with 2-foot eaves on each end for a total footprint of 20 × 28 feet. The design includes a spacious loft while remaining manageable enough for our family to build without heavy equipment.
