Turning a Shell Into a Comfortable Cabin You'll Love Living In By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Watch the Cabin Tour If you'd like to see the finished cabin before reading, here's the complete cabin tour from my YouTube channel. Bringing the Cabin to Life After months of planning, framing, roofing, and construction, we finally reached the stage we'd been looking forward to from the very beginning. Turning the shell into a home. This stage of the project wasn't about structural framing anymore. It was about creating a comfortable place where our family could gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. Unlike the exterior, the interior doesn't have to follow a specific blueprint. One of the biggest advantages of an A-frame cabin is that you can customize the inside to fit your family's needs. That's exactly what we did. Designing an Open Floor Plan Because A-frame cabins aren't especially large, we wanted every square foot to feel as o...

What I'd Do Differently (and What I'd Do Exactly the Same) By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Watch the Complete Build If you'd like to watch the entire construction process before reading these lessons, here's the complete build video from my YouTube channel.   Looking Back Several Years Later When we started building our off-grid A-frame cabin, we didn't know exactly what to expect. We had a set of book, a lot of determination, and a willingness to learn along the way. Several years later, I can honestly say I'd build another A-frame tomorrow. But I would definitely build it a little differently. These aren't major regrets. Most are simply things that experience teaches you. My hope is that by sharing them, you'll avoid a few headaches on your own project. 1. Don't Build Bigger Than You Need One of the best decisions we made was keeping the cabin reasonably sized. At 20 × 24 feet , it gave us enough room for our family without ...

Using Commercial Storefront Glass to Create a Stunning Cabin Front By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Finished glass wall looking into the forest. Watch the Complete Build If you'd like to see the installation before reading, here's the complete build video from my YouTube channel. The Feature That Defines Our Cabin When most people first see our A-frame cabin, one feature immediately catches their attention. The glass wall. It completely transforms the interior, filling the cabin with natural light and creating an incredible view of the surrounding forest. Although it looks like one massive window, it's actually a commercial storefront system that I designed and built myself. Because I've worked in the commercial glass industry for more than two decades, I was fortunate to already have the tools and experience needed for a project like this. While this approach won't be right for every cabin, I wanted to share how we built ours and some things to con...

How to Build the End Walls of an A-Frame Cabin

Framing, Waterproofing, Installing Windows and Doors, and Drying in the Cabin By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Watch the Complete Build If you'd like to watch this stage of the project before reading, here's the complete build video from my YouTube channel.   Turning a Structure Into a Cabin Once the roof was complete and the floor system was installed, it was finally time to close in the front and rear of the cabin. This was one of my favorite stages of the project because the cabin finally started feeling like a real home instead of a construction site. The end walls transformed the open A-frame structure into an enclosed space that could soon be protected from the weather. Open A-frame before end walls. Framing the End Walls Unlike the repeating A-frame trusses, each end wall required careful planning and individual framing. Every opening had to be measured precisely before cutting the lumber. We framed: Door openings Window openings Wall frami...

Installing the Subfloor, Loft, and Floor Insulation for Four-Season Comfort By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Watch the Complete Build If you'd like to watch this stage of the build before reading, here's the complete build video from my YouTube channel. Building a Comfortable Cabin Starts from the Ground Up With the roof installed and the cabin finally protected from the weather, it was time to focus on making it comfortable. One of the biggest advantages of building an off-grid cabin from scratch is the opportunity to insulate it properly from the very beginning. Living in the mountains means preparing for cold winters, so I wanted a floor system that would stay warm while standing up to years of use. This stage included insulating the floor, installing the loft flooring, and laying the tongue-and-groove subfloor that would become the foundation for the finished interior. Closing in the Bottom of the Cabin Before we could install any insulation, we first had to enclose t...

Installing Roof Sheathing, Underlayment, Metal Roofing, and a Skylight By Jim Jorgensen – Solo Jim Outdoors Watch the Complete Build If you'd like to watch the roofing process before reading, here's the complete build video from my YouTube channel. Closing in the Cabin Once all of the A-frames were standing and securely braced, it was time for one of the biggest milestones of the project. We could finally begin enclosing the cabin. Until this point the structure looked like little more than a skeleton. Installing the roof sheathing transformed it into something that finally resembled a cabin. A-frame structure ready for sheathing. Installing the Roof Sheathing We used 5/8-inch OSB to sheath the roof. The first sheets required careful positioning because they established the alignment for everything that followed. Working on an A-frame roof isn't quite like working on a conventional roof. The steep angle means you're constantly climbing, balancing,...
